Valle Intelvi, the green heart between two Lakes: trekking in Laino, Ponna and High-Altitude Views
The Valle Intelvi, nestled between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, stands out as one of the most fascinating hiking destinations in the Lombard Prealps. It is a landscape suspended between mountains and culture, defined by stone villages, vast woodlands and panoramic viewpoints considered among the most striking in the region. In recent years, the valley has seen growing interest from hikers and visitors seeking nature-filled trails, far from the busier tourist rhythms of Como and Lugano.
Among the villages that best represent the soul of the valley, Laino holds a central place. Perched in an elevated position, it has become a privileged starting point for several hikes crossing some of Valle Intelvi’s most distinctive landscapes.
The trail leading to Alpe di Blessagno—through historic mule tracks and centuries-old forests—is one of the most popular routes for lovers of light trekking. The atmosphere has remained unchanged over time: silent, authentic, shaped by the rhythm of the mountains and echoes of rural life.
Ponna: three Hamlets, one Landscape
A few kilometers further south lies Ponna, a village divided into three hamlets: Ponna Superiore, Ponna di Mezzo and Ponna Inferiore. Here, time seems to stand still—so much so that the area is often mentioned as one of the best-preserved historic villages in the entire valley.
A network of paths connects the three hamlets, offering routes suitable for every level. One of the most appreciated is the trail from Ponna Superiore toward Monte Galbiga, a scenic viewpoint offering sweeping views over Lake Como, Lake Lugano and the surrounding peaks. The variety of environments—chestnut woods, open meadows, stone paths—makes the route particularly appealing from a naturalistic perspective.
Sighignola and Generoso: the two giants of the Valley
No trekking overview in Valle Intelvi would be complete without mentioning two of its most iconic peaks: Sighignola, known as the “Balcony of Italy,” and Monte Generoso.
Sighignola is famous for its spectacular terrace overlooking Lake Lugano and the Alpine range, while Monte Generoso, reachable through various trails, offers a medium-difficulty hike highly valued by more experienced trekkers.
Both mountains embody the valley’s symbolic identity: the connection with Switzerland, its border history and a landscape that shifts constantly—from gentle slopes to rugged, more alpine terrain.
Nature, traditions and local flavors
Trekking in the Valle Intelvi is more than a sporting experience. Its villages preserve a rich cultural heritage made of traditions, rural architecture and a simple yet flavorful cuisine. Polenta, mountain cheeses, cured meats and traditional dishes are an essential stop after a day on the trails.
The blend of unspoiled nature, history and authenticity makes the Valle Intelvi an ideal destination for those wishing to explore a lesser-known yet remarkably rich corner of Lombardy.
