The Laburnum Forest in the Heart of Valle Intelvi
A Golden Enchantment
There is a magical place, hidden among the mountains of Valle Intelvi, where nature turns into poetry every spring: the Laburnum Forest (Bosco del Maggiociondolo), an enchanting corner that, every year between late May and early June, is lit up with golden hues thanks to the spectacular blooming of the laburnum (Laburnum anagyroides), a tree known for its hanging, fragrant, and vibrant yellow flowers.
Walking along the trails immersed in this brilliant yellow is a truly sensory experience: the air smells of honey, the silence of the forest is broken only by birdsong and every glimpse looks like a scene from a fairytale. Visit the forest early in the morning or at sunset to fully enjoy the interplay of light among the golden flowers and the deep peace of the place.
The forest is located in Lanzo d’Intelvi, just a short walk from the old funicular station and easily accessible with a pleasant stroll through nature.
The path is simple and suitable for everyone, making it ideal for families too.
A Forest with Stories to Tell
Tradition holds that these trees were deliberately planted along the edges of pastures to mark property boundaries and that their flowers were used to predict the weather: an early bloom, according to local shepherds, foretold a hot summer.
In more ancient times, some parts of the laburnum tree were used in folk medicine, despite the plant’s known toxicity, which has been documented for centuries.
It is also said that the forest was once a gathering place for seasonal rituals linked to the solstice, when the sun reaches its highest point and the golden flowers of the laburnum seemed to merge with the light of the sky.
A Paradise for Photographers and Nature Lovers
The best time to visit is between late May and mid-June, but each season offers a different kind of magic. In autumn, the forest glows with warm colors; in winter, it turns into a quiet, surreal landscape.
The Laburnum Forest awaits you — a small jewel of Valle Intelvi to experience with awe and respect.
